Friday February 11 - Saturday February 12 - Amsterdam! (and home to New Amsterdam)

Kamiyiha and Mondriaan teacher Thom de Groot pose in the Amsterdam Centraal Station a few minutes after our arrival there on Friday morning.  Kevin Whiston is in the background.  (Note that for this picture as for all the ones on the blog clicking it will enlarge it to make it easier to see details - like the "Welcome to Amsterdam Central Station" sign in the background.)

Thursday February 10 - A Day in Delft

With our work days over, we began to tour Holland outside of the Hague.  Today's trip was to Delft, a city famous for its blue and white china, and for its connection with the royal family of the Netherlands, especially William of Orange, the founder of the nation and the dynasty.  In the photo above, students listen to buddies Sietse and Egmelis describe the history of the Oostpoort (East Gate) of the old city, where pieces of the murderer of William of Orange were displayed after he was dismembered and executed.  (Both the Mondriaan and EBT students have a healthy adolescent interest in dismemberment, as well as a scholarly interest in law and legal precedent.)

Monday, February 7 - Walking in the Wind

Kamiyiha West leads her group on a scavenger hunt through the sites of the Hague.  The key was finding the building in the photo, walking toward it, and then searching for the next photo.  Thanks to Kamiyiha's leadership, her team finished first, with time for a nice tour of the Stadhuis (city hall)

Our first breakfast in the Netherlands, at 't Pannenkoeken Huisje at Scheveningen, by the North Sea.  We ate poffertjes (traditional mini pancakes) and had a more hearty breakfast as well.  A perfect beginning to our big adventure -- and a good way to recover from the plane.
